review of filming day four

On Thursday we had or fourth and final day of shooting. We only had to film Dan’s narrative today as he was the only one who couldn’t make it on any of the other days we were filming narrative. The first problem we encountered was trying to find a time we were all free to shoot, luckily we could all do Thursday afternoon. For Dan’s scene we wanted to film a ballerina dancing around and near him, for this we needed a quite big open space. Finding the big open space proved to be a bit more difficult than we predicted.  After around 10-15 of walking around our location we found the almost perfect spot. The only problem’s with this spot was that it had houses in the background and cars so we had to make sure we didn’t film any angles that had them in shot. The other very slight problem was the floor was covered in foliage, so we had to clear the floor space to enable the ballerina to be able to balance and also to reduce risk. We found applying the make up to the ballerina no problem at all as we knew how we wanted it and how to do it. We found the filming the scene once all set up fairly problem free, as we had story boarded in depth, and planned exactly what we want and how we want it to happen. The only slight problem with the filming was trying to find level ground to put the tripod onto. The fact that  people had to go and couldn’t stay for too long we may were not able to get as much footage as we would have liked, however what we did get should be sufficient.

On Saturday we commenced our third day of filming. The first main problem we had was that Dan wasn’t able to make it. That meant that we weren’t able to film his scene and as a result, we will have to film his scene another time. The first shot we wanted to film was Lusi and Jack’s scene. This was fairly problematic as Lusi was crying quite a bit and didn’t want to film as was a bit shy at first. We eventually got round this by filming her separately to Jack. Another problem was transport and getting people there as well. We encountered the problem of people turning up late to the shoot. Next we had to do the face paint/make up. This gave us a few problems, as we knew what we wanted, however we hadn’t practiced it so was a bit trial and error. While filming we found it fairly difficult to keep a straight face and stay in character while shooting.  This day was probably one of our overall least problematic days that we have had whilst filming. We found the filming in this fairly easy as we story boarded and did a shot by shot in great detail, so we knew exactly how we wanted to film.

On Friday we started our second day filming on location. This day’s shoot was dedicated to the performance side of our video. The first thing we had to do was to transport all the equipment/props, (instruments, amps, camera, tripod) to the location. This was fairly problematic as the carrying and transporting the instruments and amps took a while and a lot of effort. Due to when we needed to set up (before everyone got down) the carrying and transporting was left to a few people, so it was a lot of back and fourth. Another minor problem we had was due to other people having to be other places or doing other things until everyone got there, Becky was left alone to look after the equipment on location for a while. Next we set up the instruments and amps in location where we wanted them. This only had a slight problem and that was making sure the wires and plugs where hidden from view. The next problem we encountered was the camera’s battery. We were told both camera’s we took out had full battery, however when we took out on location one had no battery at all, and the other only had half battery. As a result of this we had to film everything as best we can as quick as possible, meaning we couldn’t take the same shot several times. This also meant some shots had to be cut down, and we had to make sure we got everything right pretty much first time. One other problem we had was not enough people who drive, meaning multiple trips had to be made and it was difficult to transport people and equipment. Another problem was some of the band members were bad at organizing themselves and equipment, so we had to organize everything for them as well as ourselves.

On Tuesday we started the filming process, during this we managed to get two parts of the narrative done. We started off by doing Hannah’s makeup for the narrative.  This was fairly easy and didn’t present any problems. We then found a walkway where we could film, and Hannah could emerge from the bushes and do a jolty walk. We then went on to film Nat’s reaction to seeing it. This was also fairly easy but however did present a few problems. The main one being people walking past. Another problem was trying to stay in character and maintain seriousness. Trying to figure out how Hannah should walk and how Nat should react was also a slight problem, but we got there in the end.

We then did Ben’s make up for Jacob’s narrative. We found this easy and problem free. Next we went on to film Jacob being stalked/followed by Ben. This was over a small bridge and narrow path. This wasn’t that hard however it did have a few problems. One problem being trying to get both Ben and Jacob in the shot at once, and what angle they should come in at. Another problem was that as Ben had to stare at Jacob while following him, he was slightly off balance when walking. We also found setting up the tripod, so it was even and straight was more difficult than we thought it would be.

Initially we found attaching and removing the camera from the tripod tricky, but now we can do it with ease. We found the transporting of the camera and tripod between scenes/shots, to be a lot easier than we predicted.

Video inspirations

For our video we used two videos as our main inspiration. The first of which was august burns red - white washed, which used several effects we think will work well in our video. Firstly the use of fast forwarding between band members in the opening sequence will transfer well over to our own music video, the use of extreme close ups of the instruments adds to the idea of focusing on the musical talent of the musicians and will also add to our video. The general image of the band and their costume and appearance will also be fairly similar to how the band shall be dressed.  


The second video we will be using as inspiration is pulled apart by horses- back to the f*ck yeah. The setting is what inspired us here, the trees looming around the band and the dull lighting will fit in very well with our music video. Also the way the band is set up in a general semi-circle will work well for the way we want to film mainly from the front. Also, the above angles will also work well in our video in showing the performance from a variety of angles.

After discussing some of the issues we will have getting the band’s equipment to our location with enough time to film the sequence properly we decided on our action plan to set up swiftly, and save as much time as possible for filming.

We decided that on the 13^th October all of the guitars, microphone and amps would be dropped off at Hannah’s house. The drum kit will be picked up from Matt’s house and then returned to Hannah’s house for storage as well. Then on the Friday Nat, Jacob and Ashleigh will transport all of the equipment to the location at the earliest possible time, between 2 and 4. Then Ashleigh will be picking up Matt and Jack from sixth form and bringing them to location as soon as possible. Ben, Becky and Hannah will also arrive on location around 4 o’clock in order to begin filming at the optimum time.

For one of our characters we want to shoot the person from the side without make-up and for them then to turn around, with make-up on the other side of their face. Here are some examples that we could possibly use, or adapt them to use for our video. In the top one, we like the idea of outlining the side of the face with the make-up because it makes it standout even more.
 

In this we really like the way the eye make-up and the teeth standout against the white background.

           

With this one we really like the tears and we will probably use this idea for one of our characters.

We quite like it how the black make-up around the eyes gives a bruising effect. Which we think would be quite effective by itself.

treatment

Our music video will be set in a rural location, in a wood, preferably Bobbit’s Lane in Pinewood estate. The tone will be quite dark, therefore creating tension and mystery for the audience. It will be switching between narrative and performance, both sections will be set in the woods to reflect the bands dark, eerie genre of music. The band members are also playing the main characters in the narrative part, in which they will be walking through the woods and finding strange occurrences, the audience will see this experience it as the character would through point of view shots. However, there will also be shots displaying the characters reaction and shots that follow the character to continue the creepy feel, and adding a stalker-ish appeal. The strange scenes will standout from the performance part of the video, as we will be saturating it to allow the colour of the performance shots to pop. We will also be using heavy make up and dramatic costumes in order to translate the creepy feel to the audience. The shots between narrative and performance will be intermittent, switching between each scene with simple straight cuts.

The costumes will be unusual and quirky, with dark make-up to reflect the bands metal genre. The movement of the unusual people will be quite jolty, possibly using some jump cuts to add a scarier aura around them. This will help to highlight their abnormality and exaggerate the haunting atmosphere for the audience. The performance will be very fast pace to fit in with the upbeat pace of the music, but the narrative will slowly build tension toward the atmosphere. The audience will experience the high energy of the bands music and performance, but the narrative will be a heavy contrast with the slow pace and higher tension.

Our main influences will be Pulled Apart By Horses and August Burns Red’s music video for white washed. The Pulled Apart By Horses video is set in a forest and has a similar creepy atmosphere to it, and there are several effects in August Burns Red’s video that we think will translate well into our own.

Our audience is going to be focused on a fairly broad age group, but more specifically on 13-28 year olds, giving a wide enough spectrum for teenagers and young adults. The audience is also focused on those with a particular interest for the metal genre.
